Communication

This week, I evaluated myself as a communicator.  I believe that I have good communication skills and that I communicate well with others.  I also make an effort to listen to what others have to say.  I also use make an effort to see other people's point of views when I talk to them.  After evaluating my communication skills, I believe that I can use cultural diversity and cultural competence to communicate better with diverse people.

Others have pointed out that I use a lot of hand gestures when I talk, which is a form of nonverbal communication.  It is also reported that I communicate different with various people.  For exmaple, my coworker stated that I am very formal at work; however, I am more casual with friends.  This change in my communication style stems from changes in the context and situation.

  1. Hi Geneen,

It is good to use a lot of hand gesture when we talk unless we are delivering a presentation which we have to be a bit careful. To some people hand gestures makes our message clearer. Do you think it is better for EC teachers to use a lot of hand gestures while they are communicating with the children?

  2. Hi Geneen,

I find that I use fewer hand gestures then in the past. It is important to keep work and personal communication separate. While I don’t categorize my work communication style very formal, it is certainly not the communication I use with friends. I have to maintain the ability to sometimes convey difficult information. Getting too familiar in my communication style would confuse things.

  3. Hi Geneen,
I often find myself doing a lot of hand gesturing when communicating with others as well. I also find that communication styles outside of my home environment or with my family are formal whereas in my home and with family I am more laid back.
    Thanks for sharing!
